The threat was made in a state-run newspaper in Pyongyang, which effectively acts as a mouthpiece for the one-party government.
The propaganda rag said America was risking its own destruction by holding military drills in Asia.
The article said: “The US imperialists are seeking to realise their ambition through military blackmail while introducing various means of demonstration and threat including nuclear carrier task force and nuclear submarine into South Korea.
It added North Korea “ridicules such provocation of the US imperialist warmongers unable to discern where to go as the bravado of mentally vulnerable persons and the last-ditch efforts of those at the death's door”.
The opinion piece said North Korea was uniting in the face of sanctions and worldwide condemnation, whereas it was the USA which was risking defeat.
It said: “The lunatic hysteria of the US will precipitate its own destruction
The army and people of the DPRK turned out as one, rallied closer around respected Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un and are now dynamically advancing toward the final victory.”
The piece concluded with a warning regarding North Korea’s growing nuclear might and a direct threat to Washington.
It said: “The DPRK has displayed its huge political and military might as the nuclear weapons state despite unprecedented hardships and difficulties, and it has nothing to fear.
If the US imperialists and the South Korean puppet forces make a small spark in the sphere where the DPRK exercises its sovereignty, our revolutionary armed forces will scorch the bases of aggression and provocation to make them impossible to live and reliably defend the country's security and people's happiness and achieve the historic cause of national reunification without fail.”
It comes after 38 North revealed an unusual new source of fuel for the rogue state: algae.
The Washington-based North Korea analysis website revealed thousands of barrels of oil per year is being manufactured at algae production plants.
They said: “Not enough attention has been given to the algae production of a country not known for its green policies.
“The purpose of that algae is not immediately clear, but it is a multipurpose resource that can be used to produce food, fertilizer, feedstock and fuel all from the same biomass.
“Such a resource could certainly have strategic value for North Korea and could, over time, mitigate the negative effects of sanctions both on the country’s energy supply and food security.
